    Sadness.
Every time I watch the news, I'm reminded of the reasons why I don't watch the news any more. It's because the only things that seem to happen in the world these days are depressing.

Latest news from CNN has info that the quake actually moved the main island of Japan 8 feet. MOVED the island. The coastline will be different now. All that area still under water from the tsunami is likely under water for good, barring reclamation projects. The people who lived in those areas...where are they going to go back to? They've lost everything.

The quake managed to shift the planet's axis by 4 inches as well, which is rather impressive for a tectonic event, and I hope will not have any further effect on anything...but knowing the sort of luck we tend to have, it probably will. *sighs*

    I can't even imagine what all those people are going through right now... ;_;

    A day to remember.
While I'm sure that the majority of you know that today is Towel Day, are there many among you who will also wear the lilac?

    The Annoyance of Magikano.
I managed to watch the final two discs of Magikano tonight. My eye is NOT happy with me, but I insisted on using it...well, at least partially. Most of the viewing was done with my left eye squinted shut. And it was all using my laptop, rather than a TV, since up here in my bedroom is the only place I can get the minimal light and correct distance so that I can at least mostly focus and not be in large amounts of pain.

    But I digress.

Cut inserted both for spoileriffic ranting and so that this doesn't get too long. )

    Blended iPad! *evil grin*
This is probably some degree of faked, as I can't imagine that it would really blend that well, but still...

    http://www.blendtec.com/willitblend/videos.aspx?type=unsafe&video=ipad

Seeing an iPad smacked around and then put into a blender to die just gives me a happy little warm feeling inside. There needs to be more violence against Apple products. :3

(Note: Yes, I'm slightly biased. I can't stand Apple and their "trendy must-have" electronics. I do not own, nor will I ever own, an iPod, iPhone, iPad, or any other Apple product. I don't even use iTunes, because iHate it so much. So, yeah, biased a bit. But still. ^_^ )

(Postscript Edit: Please note that I am not against other people using Apple products. Feel free to use and enjoy them to your hearts' content, but be sure to ask yourself...would I still be using this if it hadn't been so massively marketed and pushed as the "next cool thing"? This goes double for the iPad, which seems to be nothing more than a giant iPod Touch. I mean, really.)

(Post-postscript Edit Edit: Yeah, still a little on the biased side there. But seriously, if you like it, use it. I just don't like it, so I won't use it.)

(Post-post-postscript Edit Edit Edit: ...I forgot what I was going to say here. *scratches head*)

...and suddenly, it got better. o_o
After moaning and groaning over those last readings, (and realizing I forgot to also post the ping scores), I took some new ones with my laptop just a few minutes ago. The change is....surpising, to say the least.

Even more so when I noticed that Windows Update was in the middle of downloading a patch while I was taking them.

    Internet Sadness.
Noticed that things were really dragging today when I tried to browse around online...so I went to speedtest.net to see what kind of results I was getting.

For a server that is only 50 miles from me, this sort of result from my DSL is...less than good. *sighs*

Then I did some tests with servers in California, New York, and Japan. Best result? The St. Louis one. Well, stands to reason, at least.

But I'm in the bottom ten percent in my general area right now, even on somewhere as close as St. Louis. I wonder if I'd get better results when I wasn't having some sort of mysterious slowdown... x_x

Fun little Star Trek Online bit.
Just thought I'd share this with everyone, after I just now posted it on the Star Trek Online forums (I know, I know, I should be asleep. I slept for most of the day because I felt really cruddy. -_- )

Hopefully you'll get a giggle out of it even if you don't play the game. :3

    --

Okay, just did an exploration mission...and the idea behind this one was that we were investigating a meteor impact on a planet. Beamed down, the planet had a lovely blue-ish fog effect going on...very pretty. Found a bit of meteor, scanned it, and my science officer excitedly says that it contains...ferro-magnetic material! Le gasp! You mean...this meteor had iron and nickel and such in it? Gee, go figure. Silly science officer.

    But then things got sillier.

The local rubber forehead aliens decided to beam down and interfere, because they wanted the meteor fragments for themselves. My helpful yet ditzy science officer piped up with the fun little factoid that these aliens were known to be attempting to develop a new weapon utilizing ferro-magnetic materials.

At this point, I stopped and stared at her. Literally. I swiveled my toon around and just sort of looked at her there in the away team. To her credit, she did seem to fidget a little.

For those of you who are wondering why I'm so incredulous here, "ferromagnetic" materials are, basically, materials that can be made into magnets. Like, say, iron. Or nickel. Or cobalt. Or any of a number of other fairly common compounds. Oh, sure, they could be looking for some of the more complex compounds, but those would be man-made and referred to as "ferrite".

    So, essentially, my poor little science officer was convinced that if we didn't get to these fragments before the aliens did, they would...um...discover iron. Or more likely nickel. Considering that they have their own starships, somehow I doubt this is a major problem for them, really. (Although they did defend the fragments with quite a lot of fervor...) ^_^;;

Anyhoo, after defeating the annoying little buggers, up pops the science officer again, spouting about how it was a good thing we "secured these valuable resources for the war effort" before the aliens could.

So now we have a bunch of meteoric iron and nickel. I guess we could make some really scary fridge magnets, but I wasn't aware that Klingons were vulnerable to magnetism...

Anyway, thought I'd share that fun little bit of mission technobabble failure with you all. I'm not really complaining, as such, it's just that it was so freaking bizarre that I just had to mention it. XD

    ---

    So...yeah. Technobabble fail! XD

    *sighs*
Following this afternoon's incident of my having to drive to work on Interstate 70 with my left eye closed because otherwise I was seeing blurry multiples and having intense light-sensitive pain, I am now going to take a medical leave of absence from work under the FMLA rule thingies. I have been assured (by Carla, which worries me) that no part of the leave will be considered "unexcused absence", so at least it won't get me fired.

    In theory.

Today has just been horrible. I barely made it in to work, and then had to turn right around and carefully drive myself home (using the back roads this time for added safety) because there was no one at home who could come and get me, and my doctor is mad at me because she had told me right at the beginning of all this that she didn't want me driving, and I've been doing so anyway. *sighs*

Anyhoo. Stuck at home now until I go get paperwork picked up and filled out on Monday and then see the neuro opthamologist guy on Tuesday. And given that my left eye has been having different levels of sight every time I wake up, I can't wait to see what's in store for tomorrow. Whee.

    Eyeball update.
Finally got an appointment with the dang neuro opthamologist. The earliest they can get me in? Tuesday, the 15th, at 2 PM.

This means I have to try and get a manager to alter my schedule so that I have Tuesday off instead of Thursday. And keep hanging in there with my malfunctioning eyesight until then, too.

The Saga of the Mislabeled Netflix Disc
Come, children, gather 'round and listen to the tale of the Disc From Hell.

I had watched all of the first season of Vandread via Netflix and enjoyed it quite a bit. I then moved on to watching the second season. The first disc arrived, and was watched, and all was well. The second disc was delayed, but eventually arrived. Or, at least, I thought it did.

When I started watching the episodes on the disc, I was perplexed. It didn't seem to follow the story I had just been watching. And references were made to things that I had no knowledge of. I went back to the disc main menu, and noticed that the episode numbers were 8, 9, and 10. They were supposed to be 5, 6, and 7. This meant I had disc 3 instead of disc 2. I ejected the disc, and looked at it. Kinda odd...the sticker on the inner circle section of the disc said it was "Vandread: Second Stage: Sacrifice (Vol. 2)". The label on the sleeve, which was crooked (this is important), also said it was volume two. The disc itself said it was the volume "Revelations". That's the third disc, not the second. Okay, just have to report a mislabeled disc, and have Netflix send me a new one. No biggie.

Rarely am I wrong to such cataclysmic levels.

I submitted the report and sent the disc back. Shortly thereafter, I received the replacement disc, opened it up...huh. The label is crooked. That looks familiar. *slides disc out* ...it's the same disc I just sent back. *sighs* Okay, time to get on the phone with Netflix. I called them up, and explained the situation, and the lady was very nice. She said to just hang on to the disc, rather than sending it back right away, and that way I could be sure the replacement disc I was getting would be the right one. She would also send the next disc in my queue as an apology for my troubles. Okay, great, no worries, Netflix does millions of discs a day, things like this are bound to happen.

A few days pass, and the replacement disc arrives. (Meanwhile, I started watching Moon Phase. Had to get a replacement disc for the first volume of that one, too, because someone had broken it and tried to repair it with nail polish.) Before it had arrived, I had already (due to the complimentary disc thing) received volumes 3 and 4 of Vandread: Second Stage. So I was raring to go with the second volume. When the new discs arrived, I sent off the badly-labelled disc before opening the new stuff. Rather stupid of me. Opened up the new replacement...wait a sec. This label says it's the THIRD volume. I already have that one right here. What the hell? Off to the Netflix website we go!

On the website, it said that I had reported disc THREE as being mislabelled. It also showed disc two as being mislabelled but that I already had the replacement disc (the one I had just mailed off). *sighs* Back to the phone again. Got another very nice person, explained it, he said the lady I talked to before must've misunderstood me, he was very sorry, and he made absolutely sure of which one needed to be sent to me. I told him I had already sent the mislabelled one back today, so I hoped I wouldn't get it again. Chuckles all around, an additional complimentary disc is being sent as well for your trouble, very sorry about this, etc. By this point I'm freaking swimming in DVDs, but oh well.

Now we come to today, after I got home from work late this evening. I open up the three discs that arrived today. New Cutey Honey disc 2. Okay, good. Moon Phase disc 3. Also good. That means the third envelope has to be the missing Vandread disc! I opened up the envelope...oh no. I recognize that crooked label. Please, please, please....DAMMIT!!!! Once again, I have received the mislabelled disc. They still haven't labelled it properly, no one is checking ANYTHING, apparently, and it's just going to get boomeranged to me over and over again for eternity, it seems.

All I want is to watch the three episodes that come BEFORE this disc. Is this so much to ask? Why the hell is no one checking the disc? Or are they only looking at the sticker on the center of the disc and at the sleeve and seeing if they match? Because they do match, they're just on the wrong damn disc! Right labels, wrong DVD! How hard is this to check? The word "Revelations" is right next to the freaking label that says it should be "Sacrifice"!!

I'm going to call Netflix again. I'm going to tell them I don't need any complimentary DVDs, I don't need them to send the next disc in my queue, I just want the RIGHT volume two disc of Vandread: Second Stage. If necessary, I will snap this particular demon-forged disc into four or more pieces and pay for the damages, just to make sure I don't get it for a fourth time. Because this is getting very silly. And I can't take much more of it on top of everything else that is going wrong. x_x

    Tired.
Wasn't able to get hardly any sleep at all last night. Either my damn cast would wake me up (somehow or other, at one point my thumb ended bent way backwards and woke me up. x_x ) or else I would suddenly have a searing blast of pain in my left eye that would jolt me awake. I can't help but wonder if the eye going into the movement of REM sleep might be causing problems, if it's something wrong with the muscles behind the eye.

Of course, I still have no diagnosis as to what exactly IS the problem. I'm probably going to have to call the offices and pester them. The only problem there is that I still don't know when I'll be able to even go see the doctor, since the only day off I have coming up that's not on a weekend is on the 17th, and I really really don't want to wait that long. All my other days are full 9-hour shifts that inconveniently fall right in the middle of the day, meaning I couldn't even schedule an appointment around them. (According to the website, an average first visit to this place takes 3-6 hours just to do all the starting tests. And it's in St. Louis, so there's an extra 1-1.5 hours transit time depending on traffic and getting to the specific place.)

And of course, I can't just call off of work to go see the doc, because then I'd get fired for having too many unexcused absences. *sighs* x_x

    Hrm.
Getting progressively more worried on the eye thing. Yesterday my eyesight was back almost completely normal again, and then this morning there was the same sort of intense something-in-my-eye pain that happened on the 3oth, followed by sight in my left eye going down the tubes again. I've been really sleepy most of today, too; doubt that's due to the eye thing, though. Actually just sort of mini-blacked-out a few minutes ago, but it only lasted a little bit. I'll probably just go to bed shortly.

The opthamologist didn't find anything at all physically wrong with my eyes. no edema, no visible signs of infection, not even any redness. Nothing to explain the symptoms I'm having. He referred me over to a neuro opthamologist, to check the nerves and such BEHIND the eye, but I don't have an appointment set up yet. (I called the new doc to set up an appointment, but they said they couldn't do it until the opthamologist sent over the records and such. I was told to have the opthamologist send the records, along with my phone number, and then the neuro guys would call me back to set up an appointment. I did my bit of telling them to send the data, but the new place never called back on Friday. (And I had to go to work.) And they're closed on the weekend.

Tomorrow I get to call again and see what on earth is going on, because I want this diagnosed, dangit. I'm getting progressively more worried. And having more headaches.

Tomorrow I also (hopefully) get to have this damn cast taken off, and see if it managed to fix things there.

I'd write more about the stupidity happening at work, but typing all this hurts my wrist. So perhaps later. Still kinda groggy, too.

    Eyeball update.
Well, the CT scan of my head didn't show any tumors, although they just did a no-contrast scan, but now I get to go see an opthamologist. I figured I'd share the write-up I made to give the doctor and see if anyone had any comments or ideas on what the bleep is going on with my body.

    Cut for annoyance reduction )

So, yeah, that's the rundown. I get to go see the opthamologist tomorrow at 9:45, and then I get to go to work at 1:00 PM. Fun fun fun. :\

    Great.
    Now I'm all worried. Again.

Over the last few days, I've been having a lot more headaches. I figured it was just my migraines acting up again, but I think I've pinpointed the problem.

My left eye is refusing to focus. At all.

If I close my left eye and just use my right, everything (with my glasses on) is lovely and clear. With both eyes, everything is a tad off, like things aren't working quite right. Reading takes more optical effort, especially on a computer screen or reading subtitles on a tv screen. With just the left eye open, I might as well be reading underwater. At night. In a dirty pond. The general shapes are there and not really blurry in and of themselves, but reading is impossible, as is making out any fine detail. I figure the headaches are coming because my brain is trying to integrate one blurry pic with one sharp pic and tying itself into knots.

Nothing out of the ordinary has HAPPENED to my left eye, as far as I am aware, so I'm at a loss to explain why this has happened. I just had my eye exam a year or two ago, when I got this new prescription, and it seemed fine then.

So now I'm kinda torn by worry. Do I just go to the optometrist at work and see if I can get an eye exam to see if my eye has just had standard problems and I only just now noticed them, or do I go to a regular doctor first, or should I call the free Mayo Clinic Nurse Hotline that Wal-Mart employees have access to and ask them? Not doing anything at all is not an option.

Hrm. I also seem to be having difficulty opening the left eye as far as the right one. Fun.

With my luck, I probably had a stroke or something. Although I think I really would've noticed. XD

Anyhoo...yeah. more potential medical fun for Dan.

    Sheesh.
Okay, had to post about this, even with only one hand.

I just finished watching "Najica Blitz Tactics". While the anime had the largest amount of panty-shots-per-scene of anything I have ever watched, with a disturbing number of extreme-crotch-closeups, the real kicker was the ending. Or non-ending, rather. That was the most indistinct, open-to-interpretation (wow, lotsa hyphens in this post) dumb ending I have ever seen. It's like they got down to the last three minutes of show before realizing that, oh yeah, we need an ending, don't we? Um, let's just tack one on that can be interpreted about five hundred different ways and call it a day, okay? Oh, and change the end credit sequence so that people think there's something coming after it, but don't actually put anything relevant there. They love it when you do that. Jerks. x_x

Anyhoo...yeah. At least not being able to do much else for recreation is helping me catch up on my anime backlog. Gotta wait for the rest of the second season of Vandread to arrive via Netflix and for Yumeria to arrive from Right Stuf (Watched one disc via Netflix, loved it, amd ordered the full series. XD ), but until then perhaps I'll watch Slayers Try. :3

...okay, left hand hurting now. Time for sleepies. x_x

*grumbles at the incredibly stupid way the Cardinals are playing*

You're looking reeeeeally bad out there, guys. It's been about a month since you've looked good in any way, shape, or form, really. Maybe losing the NLDS would be for the best. Everyone could go home and have a long session of thinking about all the dumb things they've done until the next season starts.

And maybe we could even end up with a pitching bullpen. Y'know, a decent one. >_

    Scary.
On a whim, I decided to go to expedia.com and look over the prices for a flight to Japan plus a hotel room for the duration of the stay.

    The prices were...actually far, far less than I expected. o_o;;

    15 nights in the Shinjuku Washington Hotel, plus the round-trip flight, in March of next year....$2648. That's, like...half the amount I would've expected. For the hotel alone. o_o;;

(Of course, the Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku is right across from the Shinjuku station, but it's $3212. Hmm....$600 more for the convenience of being right near the train station...)

What's scary about all this is that...I could probably actually AFFORD that. Well, not "afford", but "could put on a credit card without maxing it out". XD

Of course, I still don't have a passport...and once I got there I would still have to worry about language barriers, money for food, money for a buying spree...so, yeah, not a total solution by any sense of the word, but it at least gives me some hope.

False though it may be. XD

    The mysteries of Netflix.
Supposedly "based on my interest in Di Gi Charat and Di Gi Charat Nyo", Netflix is suggesting that I would enjoy Jyu-Oh-Sei, Samurai Champloo, Blood+, and Afro Samurai.

...there seems to be a problem with their correlation there. XD

(As a side note, I did indeed love Di Gi Charat. Freakishly cute, nyo! :3 )
